Greville Lodge (4773)
in the Province of Warwickshire, England
Warrant 1925
The 'lodge calendar' is a fixed series of events, intermingled with social activities.
Our regular meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of the month for 7 months of the year (Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, Sept, Oct, Nov). In keeping with most Freemason lodges we do not meet in the Summer and the December meeting is replaced with the lodge Christmas party.
Meetings normally start at 6:15PM with the exception being the installation of the new Master, in November, which starts at 5:15PM.
During the meeting lodge business is carried out and takes around 2 hours after which time Brethren (members) retire to the Dining room for a meal.
After our regular meeting the '2nd part' of the evening is given over to a formal meal. This consists of 4 courses, plus Coffee and mints. The current cost is £17 excluding drinks.
During the meal various toasts and speeches are given, the National Anthem is sung and a charitable collection is taken.
Amongst Masons the meal is referred to as 'The Festive Board'.
LOI is held on the 4th Friday of the month for 10 months of the year (Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, June, July, Sept, Oct, Nov). Prior to the meeting Brethren are advised which part of the ritual (Ceremony) will be practiced and what parts they will play in the proceedings.
The purpose of LOI is to ensure that the Ceremonies held during our regular meetings are performed with the highest skill and also to allow junior members to become more accustomed to the ritual itself.
While ritual is based upon 'Emulation Workings' these were only committed to print in the preceding decades. Before then, in keeping with ancient custom, all ritual was learnt by word of mouth. It is not surprising to know therefore that variations occur between lodges. Ours are known as "Greville Workings".
LOI is under the control of two senior members of the lodge, the Preceptors.
Our regular meetings are held on the 2nd Friday of the month for 7 months of the year (Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, Sept, Oct, Nov). These normally last about 1-1.5 hrs.
The committees purpose is to discuss and transact any lodge matters prior to seeking approval from the brethren during the regular meetings. Thus they are concerned with any matter that may effect the lodge and to act in generally serving its aims.
After the committee meeting there is normally a practice or rehearsal of the ceremony that will take place at the next regular meeting by those that will be involved.
Greville social calendar includes a fully supported Christmas party together with Summer events and Ladies Evenings.
Christmas 2007 saw 67 guests attend the function at Alderson House which included a pre-dinner Drinks reception hosted by the Worshipful Master.
